Thyroid
What is Hashimoto's thyroiditis?
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid, and it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is identified with thyroid antibody testing.
How it is diagnosed
Diagnosis uses thyroid antibody testing, typically TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies, together with a full thyroid panel and symptoms.
How it is managed
When hypothyroidism develops, thyroid hormone replacement such as levothyroxine is the mainstay, with combination T4 and T3 considered when appropriate. Nutrient support is added when testing shows a need.
