Compounded GLP-1 Medications
Compounded GLP-1 medications are versions of GLP-1 drugs prepared by a compounding pharmacy. It is important to understand that compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. At Vitality Medicine RX, a compounded GLP-1 may be prescribed only when appropriate after an evaluation and only when it can be lawfully prepared by a licensed pharmacy; availability depends on current FDA rules and individual clinical need. Care is provided by telehealth in states where Dr. Miklos Major II, Sc.D., DNP, NP-BC, FAAMFM holds an active license.
What are compounded GLP-1 medications?
Compounding is the process of combining, mixing or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to an individual patient. A compounded GLP-1 is a version of a GLP-1 medication prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy.
Compounded products are not generic versions of brand-name medications, and they are not the same as or equivalent to FDA-approved products. They are prepared under different rules and are not reviewed by the FDA before they are sold.
How compounded medications differ from FDA-approved products
FDA-approved GLP-1 medications have been studied for safety, effectiveness and quality, and their manufacturing is inspected. Compounded GLP-1 medications have not gone through that review, which means there is more uncertainty about their potency, sterility and consistency.
The FDA has raised concerns about unapproved GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss, including dosing errors and safety issues. These risks are part of the conversation whenever a compounded product is discussed.
Who this care may be right for
A compounded GLP-1 may be discussed when an FDA-approved option is not available or suitable and when a licensed pharmacy can lawfully prepare the product under current FDA rules.
Availability is not guaranteed. It depends on current FDA regulations, supply situations and your individual clinical need, and it is evaluated case by case.
How telehealth care works
Care follows the same path as our other services: a discovery call, a detailed intake, appropriate labs, a findings visit and a written plan. If a compounded GLP-1 is being considered, the reasons, risks, benefits, alternatives and cost are reviewed with you.
Your state is confirmed before any care begins, and prescribing follows federal and state rules.
Labs and monitoring that may be used
Testing may include a metabolic panel, A1C, fasting insulin, lipids, liver enzymes and other labs based on your history. Body composition and metabolic markers are monitored during treatment.
Outside lab fees are billed separately and discussed in advance.
Safety, risks and side effects
Because compounded GLP-1 products are not FDA-reviewed, there is added uncertainty about dosing accuracy, sterility and consistency between batches. Dosing errors have been reported with compounded semaglutide.
GLP-1 medications in general can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other side effects, and are not appropriate for everyone. Telehealth is not for emergencies: if you have severe abdominal pain or another emergency, call 911.
Cost
Care is provided through our programs and memberships. See the Pricing page for details. Compounded medications and outside lab fees are billed separately, and costs are discussed before any treatment begins.
The practice is fee-for-service and does not bill insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and superbills are available on request.
