What causes weight gain?
Weight gain is usually multifactorial. Energy balance matters, but hormones, insulin, thyroid function, medications, sleep, stress and genetics all influence appetite, metabolism and where fat is stored.
A single cause is rarely the whole story, which is why evaluation looks at the full picture.
Common concerns
People often notice gradual weight gain despite unchanged habits, weight that concentrates around the middle, difficulty losing weight with diet and exercise, or weight gain alongside fatigue, mood or hormone symptoms.
These patterns can point toward metabolic or hormonal factors worth evaluating.
Possible causes
Contributing factors can include insulin resistance, thyroid conditions, hormone changes such as perimenopause or low testosterone, medications, poor sleep, chronic stress, and changes in activity or diet.
Identifying which factors apply to you guides both evaluation and treatment.
How it is evaluated
Evaluation includes a detailed history, medication review and labs: thyroid panel, fasting glucose, A1C, fasting insulin, lipids, liver enzymes and hormone markers as appropriate.
Labs are completed near you or with home kits where available, depending on your state and the tests ordered.
Care options that may be considered through telehealth
Depending on findings, care may include nutrition and lifestyle planning, sleep and stress support, thyroid or hormone management, and, when appropriate after evaluation, medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists.
The plan is individualized, monitored and adjusted over time.
Lifestyle factors
Protein and fiber, regular activity including strength training, consistent sleep, stress management and mindful eating habits are the foundation. The plan makes these realistic and sustainable rather than prescriptive.
When to seek urgent care
Weight gain is not an emergency, and telehealth is not for emergencies. Rapid weight gain with shortness of breath, leg swelling or chest pain can signal a serious problem and warrants immediate care: call 911 or go to the emergency room.
