Weight Loss and GLP-1

Are compounded GLP-1 medications FDA-approved?

No. Compounded GLP-1 medications are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. They are not the same as or equivalent to brand-name medications.

What the FDA says

The FDA has raised concerns about unapproved GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss, including dosing errors with compounded semaglutide. Compounded products are prepared by licensed pharmacies under different rules.

When a compounded GLP-1 may be considered

A compounded GLP-1 may be prescribed only when appropriate after evaluation and only when it can be lawfully prepared by a licensed pharmacy. Availability depends on current FDA rules and individual clinical need.
