Fatigue
Fatigue that persists despite rest can have many causes, including thyroid problems, hormone changes, sleep disorders, anemia, nutrient deficiencies, stress and metabolic issues. Vitality Medicine RX offers nurse practitioner-led telehealth evaluation for fatigue, available in states where Dr. Miklos Major II, Sc.D., DNP, NP-BC, FAAMFM holds an active license. What is fatigue?
Fatigue is a persistent sense of exhaustion or low energy that does not resolve with rest and interferes with daily life. It is different from ordinary tiredness after a long day.
Because fatigue is so common and so nonspecific, a careful evaluation is the only reliable way to identify contributing factors.
Common patterns
Some people feel exhausted all day, others crash after meals, and others wake unrefreshed despite a full night in bed. The pattern, timing and what makes it better or worse are all important clues.
Keeping a simple symptom log before the visit can make the evaluation more productive.
Possible causes
Fatigue is usually multifactorial. Common contributors include thyroid conditions, hormone changes, sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, anemia or iron deficiency, vitamin D or B12 deficiency, insulin resistance, chronic stress, depression and certain medications.
The evaluation sorts out which factors apply to you rather than guessing.
How it is evaluated
Evaluation includes a detailed history, medication review and labs: complete blood count, iron studies, thyroid panel, vitamin D and B12, metabolic panel, glucose and A1C, and hormone markers as appropriate.
Labs are completed near you or with home kits where available, depending on your state and the tests ordered.
Care options that may be considered through telehealth
Depending on findings, care may include thyroid or hormone management, nutrient correction, sleep support, stress management, and nutrition and activity planning.
When a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea is suspected, a sleep study and coordination with a sleep specialist may be recommended.
Lifestyle factors
Consistent sleep timing, morning light, regular activity, balanced meals with adequate protein, hydration and stress management support energy. The plan makes these changes gradual and sustainable.
When to seek urgent care
Fatigue is not usually an emergency, and telehealth is not for emergencies. Fatigue with chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe bleeding or stroke symptoms warrants immediate care: call 911 or go to the emergency room.
